While philanthropic giving has long been a part of our news infrastructure, recent iterations present new experiments and proposed new models for funding journalism. We'll hear from The Seattle Times, and their work to crowdsource funding for investigative reporting; the Texas Tribune, whose trailblazing efforts have established an award-winning, state-wide digital-first operation; the American Journalism Project, which is modeled on the success of Chalkbeat and the Texas Tribune, and is helping local civic news organizations grow the business capacity they need to succeed; and Lenfest Institute, where they are working to support sustainable business models for local journalism in Philadelphia and beyond.
This session is designed for:
- News leaders continuing to consider the evolution of organization funding models
- Educators curious about what the next decade of local news might look like for emerging talent
- Anyone with an interest in how we might better support state and local news
