Restoring Trust in the Media: Nutrition Labels for News

An interactive workshop on NewsGuard’s efforts to help restore trust in the media by establishing credibility and transparency standards for websites and helping news consumers discern the reliability of their online news sources.

The internet has upended the news landscape, making it difficult for readers to determine which sources produce quality journalism. NewsGuard has been working with journalists from all over the world to establish and apply standards of credibility and transparency for news websites. In the process of creating Nutrition Label reviews of online sources, NewsGuard has spoken with hundreds of news publishers. NewsGuard is seeking to continue these conversations as it refines its rating process, which is being licensed by tech companies such as Microsoft. In this workshop, journalists will learn about NewsGuard’s rating methodology and provide feedback on how NewsGuard can continue to achieve its mission of fighting misinformation, spreading news literacy, and restoring trust in the media.
