Privacy and Threats to Journalists at the Border

We will explore our work as journalists, human rights advocates, and lawyers with a review of the emerging press freedom issues at the U.S. – Mexico border, including privacy threats around government surveillance, First Amendment and other legal considerations, as well as the overarching risks around storytelling at the border.

We will explore the news regarding detention and surveillance of over 59 journalists, human rights advocates, and lawyers who have been held at the U.S. – Mexico border due to their work. We will further delve into the advocacy we are working on to defend press freedom at the border and to undercover more information regarding the safety and underlying legal considerations for individuals who work in this space. Audience members should be members of the media, human rights practitioners, or legal and policy advocates interested in understanding the unique risks for those covering news at the border.
