How to Approach Difficult Conversations: A Guide to Improve Your Newsroom Culture, Your Coverage and Your Life

A workshop on steps to take to handle tough talks, including what to consider about yourself beforehand, how to disagree with empathy and how to follow up to get the results you want.

“What were they thinking?” It can be tricky to talk to a reporter who files a tone-deaf lede. Or to call attention to an inefficient process on your team or a lack of diversity in your newsroom. And it can be harder still to figure out how to discuss impending burnout with a manager. In this workshop, I share, step by step, how I navigate tough talks — with tactics for weighing whether to have a talk at all, determining how to frame a conversation and moving forward afterward. Also included: participant role-playing, plus tips for anyone who would rather eat scorpions than confront a colleague.
