Everyday Islamophobia: Breaking down anti-Muslim bigotry in news

Islamophobia is normalized in society and the newsroom. Here’s how we start to fix that.

Many were awakened to the dangers of Islamophobia after the horror of the terrorist attack on Christchurch, New Zealand mosques last March that left 100 people dead and wounded. But Islamophobia is not the exclusive domain of violent extremists, gangs and mobs on our streets, or the uncle no one listens to at family gatherings. It is present in our everyday lives — including in our newsrooms.

Islamophobia exhibits itself in our newsrooms from the stories we select, to who covers them, to the language and imagery we use, and whom we recruit and hire in the first place.

This session will deconstruct everyday Islamophobia with a range of professionals in news, and diversity and inclusion experts.

Participants will gain a clearer understanding of how to recognize and avoid the pitfalls of implicit bias for Islamophobia, and how to improve our news organizations to better serve the public interest.
