Amy Kovac-Ashley

Amy L. Kovac-Ashley is the American Press Institute’s director of newsroom learning. Her work focuses on newsroom culture, transformational change, talent development and diversity. She oversees API's work with the Knight-Lenfest Newsroom Initiative and leads API's community listening program. She also presents and advises news leaders on diversity and inclusion efforts, including mentorship programs.

Kovac-Ashley has worked as a journalism educator and administrator on the undergraduate and graduate levels at West Virginia University and Georgetown University, respectively. Prior to that, she spent a dozen years as a professional journalist. She reported on education and other local affairs at The Herald News and The Roanoke Times and was an editor at Foreign Policy magazine, Patch.com and The Washington Post, where she was the paper’s first social media editor. She holds a master’s degree from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism and a master’s and bachelor’s degree from Stanford University.
