You’re the only one in the meeting

Let’s create a remote worker toolkit for managing up, down, or sideways.

When you go remote, people give you one recurring piece of advice: Don’t stop getting dressed in the morning. We then tend to focus on the routine at the remote location—remember to take breaks, establish boundaries, seek out human connection.

But being remote presents real challenges to the type of relationship-building at the center of teamwork and effective management.

I’ve spent the past two years working remotely, figuring out how to adapt when managing up/down/sideways, how to build trust with teams, and how to communicate effectively when a lot of the ambient data (hm, he seems stressed this morning) becomes invisible.

I’d love to facilitate a discussion between remote workers and their non-remote counterparts to create a shared document we could share out with the wider ONA community—tips, tricks, knowledge, and recommendations for working this way.
