Internetting While Brown/Black AND a Woman: A Collective Guide, Part Two

Part two of a honest and intense workshop/discussion started in this community last year: how women reporters can protect themselves from threats and harassment, how newsrooms can and should step up protective measures and responses, and how to strengthen solidarity with marginalized communities like WOC and LGBTQ+ women.

In order for women to contribute diverse perspectives and influence news coverage, they need to be free of the threats and harassment that prevent them from doing their jobs.

We held a 1/3 panel, 2/3 small discussion group and workshop session on this topic last year. A lot of women showed up, shared stories and challenges of professional and personal harassment, and were seeking different resources to deal with it all.

We think a part 2 of this session would be extremely valuable to keep the conversation going, share new research done by the Committee to Protect Journalists and share new resources that have been tested by the International Women’s Media Foundation.

Confronting this central issue of the internet age requires a custom-built infrastructure. With dedicated experts leading small group conversations, we’ll continue to workshop a guide of strategies and tips for dealing with safety issues online.

Note: This session is intended for anyone who risks online trolling and harassment, and we will incorporate specifics for women of color, who have a distinct set of challenges.
