Diverse hiring in practice: Putting theory into action

A practical, behind-the-scenes look at at hiring with diversity and inclusion as a priority.

Diversity often gets tossed around as a buzzword – and just as often excuses get made for why it’s too hard, too expensive or too time-consuming to make it happen. But in reality, those are all solvable problems. This session will arm participants with real-life examples and a variety of strategies they can bring back to their newsroom whether they’re a hiring manager or not.

Are you an entry-level journalist who cares about diversity? A new manager hiring for the first time who wants to make sure you factor in diversity? Or someone hoping to influence your organization’s leaders to push wider change across the board? This session will cover all of those scenarios and more.

By the time this session is over, we’ll have talked through tips and best practices for inclusive hiring that apply to any newsroom or organization. We’ll talk through specifics about how to handle challenging situations and influence leaders. We’ll talk about how there’s more than one kind of “diversity.” And we’ll aim to solve common problems that come up when advocating for diversity in the newsroom.
